NBR Launches Online Tax Returns With Early Filing Incentive

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has officially launched the online income tax return submission portal for individual taxpayers for the 2026–27 assessment year. Alongside the system’s launch, the tax authority introduced a financial incentive offering a 5 percent rebate on net tax payable, capped at a maximum of 25,000 taka, for taxpayers who complete their filings between July and September.

Details of the initiative were announced in an official press release issued by the NBR on Wednesday, 22 July.

The tax administration clarified that the e-return portal was made accessible to individual taxpayers starting 22 July as part of ongoing structural efforts to make tax services more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly.

Since its initial debut in 2021, the digital filing portal has seen expanding adoption among citizens across the country. During the preceding 2025–26 assessment year, a record 4.7 million individual taxpayers successfully submitted their tax declarations via the digital portal. The platform allows individuals to calculate, prepare, and submit their annual tax documentation directly from their homes without visiting local tax offices.

Through a special administrative order, the NBR has rendered online filing mandatory for all standard individual taxpayers. Specific exemptions, however, remain in place allowing traditional paper returns for designated categories. These exempt groups comprise senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically disabled persons or individuals with special needs holding valid medical certification, expatriate Bangladeshis residing abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals employed within Bangladesh. Individuals encountering severe technical registration errors on the digital platform may also submit paper filings, provided they secure prior written approval from an Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.

Tax payments can be settled directly through the official tax portal using bank transfers, debit and credit cards, alongside mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. Once accurate information is submitted, taxpayers can immediately download official acknowledgements and tax certificates from the portal.

The revenue board emphasised that the 5 percent incentive (up to 25,000 taka) will exclusively apply to tax returns submitted within the July–September window. Filings completed after September will forfeit the rebate eligibility, while submissions delayed past the December deadline will incur statutory tax penalties under existing revenue laws. The NBR has urged all eligible taxpayers to complete their filings well in advance to avoid last-minute complications.
