Fifty-Year-Old Arrested Following Alleged Sexual Assault in Savar

Local residents in Savar, on the western outskirts of Dhaka, have detained and handed over a 50-year-old man to the police following the alleged sexual assault of a nine-year-old child.

The suspect, identified as Md. Uthan Mia, also known locally as Hari, was caught at the scene late on Wednesday night in the Bedepara Tin Rastar Mor area within Savar Municipality. Uthan Mia is the son of the late Kishok (also recorded as Ishok) Ali and resides in the neighbouring Porabari locality.

Midnight Cry for Help Triggers Local Intervention

According to police reports and accounts from local residents, the attack took place around midnight on Wednesday, 22 July. The suspect reportedly cornered the young girl in a secluded spot, using physical intimidation and explicit death threats to force her into compliance.

Despite the threat to her life, the young victim cried out during the assault. Her screams alerted nearby householders and passers-by, who rushed to the location and caught the suspect red-handed. News of the assault spread rapidly through the immediate area, provoking intense outrage among gathered residents.

The crowd subjected Uthan Mia to a beating before community members restrained the situation and alerted the authorities. Officers from Savar Model Police Station responded promptly to the emergency call, taking custody of the injured suspect at the scene and securing the area.

Medical Examination and Legal Proceedings

Following the rescue of the child, police officers assisted her family in arranging immediate medical care. The young victim was transported to the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital for specialised medical examination, forensic evaluation, and psychological care.

The girl’s family subsequently lodged a formal written statement (ejahar) at Savar Model Police Station. Based on their complaint, law enforcement authorities registered a case against Uthan Mia under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act.

Inspector (Investigation) Abdur Noor of Savar Model Police Station confirmed the formal arrest and detailed the ongoing investigation.

Official Statement: “Upon receiving information regarding the child’s assault, a police team responded immediately to the scene, apprehending the accused and bringing him into custody. He has been formally arrested under the case filed by the victim’s family. A detailed investigation is under way, and preparations are being made to present the suspect in court. We are gathering all necessary forensic and circumstantial evidence to ensure strict legal accountability.”

Vulnerabilities Across Dhaka’s Industrial Fringe

Savar forms a key component of the Greater Dhaka industrial belt, housing thousands of garment factories, informal workshops, and dense worker settlements. Rapid, unplanned urban growth in localities like Bedepara and Porabari has created dense residential pockets that often lack adequate street illumination, security infrastructure, and community oversight.

These structural conditions create heightened vulnerabilities for young children, many of whose parents work long shifts in local manufacturing plants. Specialized facilities like the One-Stop Crisis Centre at DMCH play a pivotal role in such cases, offering integrated medical, legal, and legal-forensic assistance to survivors under one roof. Authorities have assured that evidence gathered from both the crime scene and the medical examination will be presented meticulously in court as legal proceedings move forward.
