Two Motorcyclists Killed in Bus Collision in Dhamrai

Two motorcyclists were killed after a bus struck their motorcycle on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of the capital, on Saturday morning (25 July).

The accident occurred in the Islam­pur area of Dhamrai upazila, according to police and local residents. The victims were identified as Abash Saha and Sujoy Saha.

Abash Saha was a postgraduate student at Debendra College in Manikganj. Sujoy Saha, the son of Ashutosh Saha from the Shibalaya police station area of Manikganj, was an Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) candidate.

According to police and eyewitnesses, a bus had broken down earlier in the morning and was standing beside the main carriageway in the Islam­pur area. The presence of the stationary vehicle reportedly disrupted the normal flow of traffic on the busy highway.

Several vehicles travelling behind the broken-down bus then collided with one another. At one point, a bus hit the motorcycle carrying Abash and Sujoy, leaving both riders critically injured.

Local people rushed to the scene following the crash and helped rescue the injured men. They were taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, both succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical care, according to the authorities.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed when vehicles break down on busy highways and remain close to active traffic lanes. On major roads such as the Dhaka–Aricha Highway, even a temporary obstruction can create a dangerous situation, particularly when drivers approaching from behind have limited time to react.

The highway is a key transport route connecting Dhaka with Savar, Dhamrai, Manikganj and other parts of the region. It carries a large volume of passenger and commercial traffic every day. When a vehicle becomes disabled, traffic conditions can change suddenly, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions and chain crashes.

Police said they were attempting to contact the families of the deceased. Sub-Inspector Shahadat Hossain of Savar Highway Police Station said the authorities were working to confirm the identities and establish contact with the victims’ relatives.

He said further action would be taken in accordance with the law once the formal identification process was completed.

The precise circumstances leading to the collision, including how the chain of crashes began and how the bus struck the motorcycle, had not been fully established at the time of reporting. Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the necessary legal procedures.

The deaths of the two young men have brought grief to their families and communities in Manikganj. Their educational backgrounds also underline the personal loss caused by the crash, as one was pursuing postgraduate studies while the other was preparing for his HSC examinations.

The incident also raises broader concerns about highway safety and the need for disabled vehicles to be moved away from active traffic lanes as quickly as possible. Proper warning measures and timely traffic management can be crucial in preventing secondary collisions when vehicles become stranded on busy roads.
