Fifty-Nine-Year-Old ‘King Kazu’ Makes History with Remarkable Goal

Age continues to prove no barrier for Japanese footballing icon Kazuyoshi Miura, who has rewritten the history books by scoring an official competitive goal at the age of 59. Widely revered as ‘King Kazu’, the veteran striker ended a drought of 1,351 days without an official goal, demonstrating that his passion for the sport remains undiminished across five decades.

Miura’s milestone arrived during the Fukushima Prefecture Final, where his side, Fukushima United, delivered a dominant performance to defeat Iwaki Furukawa 7–0. The resounding victory secured Fukushima United a coveted spot in the main draw of this season’s Emperor’s Cup.

On the day of the fixture, Miura was aged 59 years and 194 days. His previous competitive strike had come on 12 November 2022 whilst representing Suzuka in the Japan Football League. Since making his move to Fukushima United, the forward had not featured for more than 50 minutes in a single match. Entrusted with the captain’s armband for this clash, he played a crucial role in leading his team from the front.

The historic moment unfolded seven minutes into the second half with Fukushima United already holding a comfortable 4–0 lead. The move was instigated by 23-year-old winger Takatora Einaga, who embarked on a brilliant solo run down the right flank. After beating three defenders, Einaga delivered a precise, low cut-back into the penalty area. Relying on his vast experience, Miura timed his run impeccably, slipping past the opposition defenders to slot home a first-time, right-footed finish into the net.

The goal marked Miura’s first strike in Fukushima United colours. The stadium erupted in celebration as the veteran embraced his young teammate, Einaga, pointing his finger towards the sky with his trademark smile. Teammates rushed from across the pitch to congratulate the legendary striker. Whilst it was the fifth goal of a seven-goal rout, it undeniably proved to be the defining highlight of the afternoon.

Recognised globally as the oldest active professional footballer, Miura began his senior career in 1986 in Brazil. Set to celebrate his 60th birthday next February, his longevity remains unprecedented in modern sport.

Following Miura’s record-breaking contribution, Fukushima United can now look forward to the main tournament of the Emperor’s Cup, scheduled to commence on 19 August.
