Legendary Singer Mesbah Reflects as Iconic Hit Resurfaces Online

A timeless Bangladeshi classic is dominating social media feeds once again, bringing veteran frontman Mesbah Rahman back into the spotlight. Across digital platforms, users are attaching the soulful tracks “Aj Keno Mon Udashi Hoye” and “Sraboner Megh Gulo Joro Holo Akashe” to their posts to express solidarity with Beauty Rani Paul, a headteacher at a government primary school in Sylhet who recently faced severe online bullying. Teachers, artists, and citizens from all walks of life have united behind the song as a symbol of gentle protest, introducing a whole new generation to the signature voice of the pioneer band Different Touch.

The song itself was born on a rainy monsoon night in August 1987. Different Touch was working on a new album and needed one final track to complete the project. Amid days of persistent downpours, lyricist Ashraf Babu penned the memorable lines that would go on to define the band’s legacy. Speaking over the phone, Mesbah expressed deep gratitude that people have chosen his music as a language of protest, noting that seeing their creation resonate so powerfully decades later remains a rewarding feeling. Addressing the controversy, the singer mentioned that he found nothing objectionable in Beauty Rani Paul’s video and viewed the public’s wave of musical solidarity as a positive phenomenon.

Reflecting on the early days of Different Touch, Mesbah fondly recalled their breakthrough performance on Bangladesh Television (BTV) during a special Eid broadcast. In the era of cassette albums, that single television appearance transformed the band into household names overnight, triggering widespread popularity across the country once the album hit the shelves.

Over the years, the song has accumulated its share of lighthearted stage memories. Mesbah recalled performing at Jahangirnagar University’s open-air amphitheatre, where torrential rain broke out the moment they struck the first chords of “Sraboner Megh Gulo”, forcing the crew to halt the show to save expensive equipment. Remarkably, the exact same incident occurred when the university re-invited the band the following year, creating an enduring memory for the musician.

Whether performing domestically or abroad, Mesbah notes that audiences consistently take over the vocals, often singing the lyrics back to him in unison. He attributes the track’s timeless appeal not just to its lyrics or melody, but to its iconic guitar intro, which instantly establishes an emotional connection with listeners.

Today, Mesbah remains as active as ever, regularly headlining concerts both at home and abroad. He recently completed successful stage shows in Gazipur, Comilla, Khulna, and Bogra, alongside high-profile performances at the “Sobar Age Bangladesh” concert near the Parliament House and a show at Dhaka University’s Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall.

The band is currently putting the final touches on brand-new material in the studio. Several new tracks have already been tested during live performances to enthusiastic audience feedback. Rather than relying solely on traditional audio releases, Different Touch plans to launch these new songs complete with music videos on their official YouTube channel, ensuring their music continues to reach old fans and new audiences alike.
