Student League Rally Held in Feni

A procession organised by the Feni Government College unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League took place in the Lalpul area along the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Feni on Friday (31 July), despite the presence of law enforcement in the area. Police have since launched an inquiry into the incident.

According to local sources, the rally was held on Friday morning and drew the participation of more than one hundred activists. The procession was reportedly led by Noman Habib, president of the Feni Government College Chhatra League unit. Witnesses said he was seen at the front of the march wearing a plain white T-shirt.

Residents said the procession moved through the Lalpul section of the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway before heading towards Chhanua Union in Feni Sadar Upazila. The gathering lasted only a short time, after which the participants dispersed from the area.

Footage and photographs of the procession were later shared on Facebook by Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim, a former Awami League Member of Parliament for the Feni-1 constituency. The images and videos were posted from his verified Facebook account at approximately 11:26 a.m. on Friday.

In his Facebook post, Nasim stated that the procession was organised to demand the withdrawal of restrictions imposed on the Bangladesh Awami League, the cancellation of the sentence handed down to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the withdrawal of cases filed against party leaders and activists, and the unconditional release of what he described as political prisoners. He also expressed gratitude to those who took part in the demonstration and concluded his message with the slogan, “Joy Bangla.”

Following the circulation of the videos and photographs on social media, law enforcement authorities began looking into the matter. Additional Superintendent of Police (Feni Sadar Circle) Nishat Tabassum said the incident had come to the attention of the police through social media and that inquiries were underway to verify the details.

Sajal Kanti Das, the Investigation Officer of Feni Model Police Station, said a police team had been dispatched to the Lalpul area after receiving information about the procession. Officers have been collecting statements from local residents, shopkeepers and other potential witnesses to establish the sequence of events.

Police officials said the identities of those involved, the circumstances surrounding the rally and any possible legal implications are being examined. They added that any further action would be taken in accordance with the findings of the ongoing investigation.

The incident has generated discussion locally, particularly because it took place on one of Bangladesh’s busiest highways. Authorities have indicated that they will continue gathering evidence before reaching any conclusions regarding the event.
