Bangladesh Cricket Board Seeks Government Help for India Tour

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sought direct government assistance to help secure India’s proposed tour of Bangladesh, with the series still awaiting formal confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

According to a report by cricket-focused media outlet Cricbuzz, BCB president Tamim Iqbal and security committee chairman Saiyed Ibrahim met Foreign Minister Shama Obaid Islam at her office on Thursday, 30 July. During the meeting, the BCB reportedly requested that the government establish formal communication with the Indian authorities and convey a positive message regarding the proposed tour.

Tamim confirmed that the meeting had taken place but declined to disclose details of the discussions.

The proposed tour is scheduled for September and is expected to comprise three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals. However, the absence of formal approval from the BCCI means the six-match white-ball series remains uncertain. The BCB is understood to be hopeful that the tour can go ahead, but some of the factors influencing the decision lie beyond the cricket board’s direct control.

Speaking on 29 July, Tamim had indicated that the BCB remained optimistic about hosting India. His comments also suggested that government-level engagement could be necessary to address issues extending beyond cricket administration. The latest meeting with the foreign minister appears to reflect that approach.

The proposed series also comes against the backdrop of a period of strained relations between the two countries. A bilateral series that had been planned for 2024 was postponed amid political instability in Bangladesh at the time. Efforts to stage the series in 2025 also failed to produce a firm outcome, with tensions between the two cricket boards contributing to continued uncertainty.

Relations between the two cricketing nations have also been affected by wider diplomatic and sporting developments. Disagreements surrounding participation in major international tournaments, including the World Cup, have added to the strain in recent years. As a result, cricketing ties between Bangladesh and India have increasingly been viewed within the broader context of bilateral relations.

The BCB’s new board, however, appears keen to rebuild ties and restore greater stability to the relationship. A successful India tour in September would therefore carry significance beyond the six matches themselves. It could provide an opportunity for the two cricket administrations to rebuild confidence and establish a more predictable framework for future bilateral engagements.

There have also been signs of a more positive diplomatic atmosphere between Dhaka and New Delhi. According to the report, the Indian government has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as a special guest to the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled to take place in September. On 29 July, Foreign Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman also said that Bangladesh and India had agreed to advance bilateral relations on the basis of mutual interests and sovereign equality.

Those developments are being viewed as encouraging signals for the broader relationship. Whether they will translate into progress on the cricketing front remains to be seen.

For now, the key issue is the BCCI’s formal approval. The BCB’s decision to seek government assistance underlines the importance it attaches to securing the tour, while also acknowledging that diplomatic and security considerations may influence the final outcome. If the necessary clearances are secured, the six-match white-ball series could mark an important step towards restoring regular cricketing ties between Bangladesh and India.

Until then, uncertainty remains over whether India’s proposed September visit will proceed as scheduled.
