Five Awami League Activists Arrested in Patharghata Raids

Police in Patharghata of Barguna have arrested five leaders and activists associated with the Awami League and its affiliated organisations during a series of raids carried out in different parts of the upazila.

According to police, the arrests took place between the early hours of Tuesday morning and later in the morning during separate operations conducted across Patharghata Municipality and the Kalmegha Union. The detainees were subsequently produced before the court after being shown as accused in several cases filed in Patharghata and elsewhere in Barguna district.

The individuals arrested have been identified as Masum Billah, 45, publicity and publications secretary of the Barguna District Krishak League; Russell Mia, 32, former president of the Kalmegha Union Torun Projonmo League and former assistant secretary of the Patharghata College unit of the Chhatra League; Jahangir Jamaddar, 50, president of the Patharghata Upazila Matsyajibi League; Sujan Akon, 33, general secretary of Ward No. 4 Jubo League under Patharghata Municipality; and Sabuj Akon, 20, described by police as an active member of the Patharghata Upazila Chhatra League.

Police officials said the five suspects were apprehended at different times from their respective localities as part of separate operations. They added that each of the detainees had been named as an accused in cases currently under investigation in Patharghata and other areas of Barguna. Following the completion of the initial legal formalities, they were sent to court.

The authorities did not immediately disclose the specific allegations or the nature of the individual cases against each of the accused. No official statement was issued regarding whether any of those arrested had sought bail or made representations through legal counsel at the time of their court appearance.

Law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh regularly conduct targeted operations to arrest individuals wanted in pending criminal cases. Such drives often involve suspects linked to political parties and affiliated organisations when warrants or ongoing investigations require their detention. Under the country’s criminal justice process, a person named in a case may be arrested and produced before a court, which then determines the next legal steps, including remand, bail, or judicial custody, based on the facts presented by investigators and the applicable law.

Police maintained that the latest operation in Patharghata formed part of routine efforts to execute pending cases and ensure that individuals named in those cases are brought before the courts. The investigations into the relevant cases remain ongoing, and further legal proceedings will continue in accordance with the decisions of the judiciary.
