No security threat over Int’l Mother Language Day observance: DMP chief

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali has assured that there is no security threat surrounding the observance of International Mother Language Day-2025.

“We have not identified any security threats regarding the Ekushey February celebrations,” he stated after reviewing the security arrangements at and around the Central Shaheed Minar.

To ensure a peaceful observance, three to four-tier security measures have been implemented around the Shaheed Minar and its adjacent areas, similar to previous years. Law enforcement officers, along with other security forces, will remain vigilant to prevent any untoward incidents, he added.

The security measures will remain in effect until 3:00 PM tomorrow. As part of the arrangements, archways have been installed, and visitors must pass through metal detector screenings before entering the Central Shaheed Minar premises.

“We have taken all necessary precautions to prevent the entry of flammable substances, explosives, or any other hazardous materials,” the DMP Commissioner emphasized. Additionally, multiple mobile teams will be deployed within a one-kilometer radius of the Shaheed Minar to further strengthen security.

He urged attendees to maintain discipline while placing floral wreaths in honor of the language martyrs.

Traffic Arrangements for the Day

Regarding traffic management, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Sarwar announced that seven key intersections would be closed to accommodate the large crowd expected near the Central Shaheed Minar. These points include:

• Shahbagh Crossing
• Nilkhet Crossing
• Shahidullah Hall Crossing
• High Court Crossing
• Chankharpul Crossing
• Palashi Crossing
• Bakshibazar Crossing

For pedestrian movement, designated entry and exit routes have been outlined. The entry points will be from Palashi Crossing to Bhaskarya Crossing and Jagannath Hall Crossing, while exits will be through Romna Crossing and Doyel Chattar Crossing.

Like every year, people across the country will pay tribute to the language martyrs by placing floral wreaths. The Palashi Gate of Dhaka University will be opened to the public at approximately 12:40 AM.
