Four Arrested After Chhatra League Rally

Four people have been arrested after police dispersed a procession allegedly organised under the banner of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj district. Authorities have also filed a case against the suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Act, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in the area.

According to sources at Shahzadpur Police Station, the incident took place at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday, 4 August, in the Naluya area of Shahzadpur municipal town. Police said the accused brought out a procession under the name of the banned student organisation before law enforcement officers launched an operation in response to the information they received.

During the operation, officers detained four individuals from the procession. The arrested suspects have been identified as Yamin Sardar, son of Abdul Salam Sardar, and Tawhid Islam, son of Abdul Khaleq, both residents of Naluya Uttarpara in Shahzadpur municipal town. The other two detainees are Shafiqul Islam, son of Shukur Ali, from Naluya Madhyapara, and Joy, son of Mukdum Sardar, also from the same locality.

Police said a case has been registered against the four under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Following the completion of the initial legal formalities, the accused were produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon.

Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam of Shahzadpur Police Station said the police remain committed to preserving peace and ensuring public safety across the upazila. He stated that officers acted immediately after receiving information about the procession organised in the name of the banned Chhatra League, leading to the arrest of the four suspects.

The officer added that legal proceedings have already been initiated against those arrested and that the investigation will continue in accordance with the law.

The incident comes amid continued law enforcement scrutiny of activities linked to organisations that have been declared banned by the authorities. In recent months, police have maintained heightened vigilance in several parts of the country to prevent unauthorised political gatherings and to enforce existing legal restrictions where applicable.

Officials have reiterated that any alleged activities carried out in violation of the law will be dealt with through the country’s judicial process. The arrests in Shahzadpur form part of those broader enforcement efforts, with police emphasising that maintaining public order and ensuring compliance with the law remain their primary responsibilities.
