Six More Die Amid Measles Symptoms

Six more people have died after developing symptoms consistent with measles during the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures released by Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Four of the six deaths were reported from the Dhaka Division, highlighting the continued concentration of cases in one of the country’s most densely populated regions.

The latest situation report, issued by the DGHS on Thursday, covers the 24-hour period from 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday to 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. During the same reporting period, another 733 people were admitted to hospitals with symptoms suggestive of measles, indicating that the outbreak continues to place significant pressure on healthcare facilities.

Health authorities said that the cumulative number of deaths among people who developed measles-related symptoms has now reached 764 since 15 March. Of those, laboratory confirmation has established that 96 deaths were directly attributable to measles.

The distinction between deaths involving measles symptoms and laboratory-confirmed measles remains significant. While many patients present with clinical signs associated with the disease, not every suspected case can be immediately verified through laboratory testing. Public health officials continue to investigate suspected infections while expanding diagnostic efforts to determine the exact burden of the outbreak.

The sustained rise in hospital admissions suggests that transmission remains active in several parts of the country. Hospitals have continued to receive patients exhibiting common symptoms associated with measles, including high fever, skin rash, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Young children, individuals with weakened immune systems and those who have not received recommended vaccinations remain among the groups most vulnerable to severe illness and complications.

Health authorities have repeatedly emphasised the importance of early medical attention for anyone displaying symptoms compatible with measles. Prompt diagnosis and supportive treatment can help reduce the risk of serious complications, while timely reporting assists public health teams in monitoring the spread of the disease.

The DGHS has continued to monitor the evolving situation through regular surveillance and daily reporting. Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant, seek medical care without delay if symptoms develop, and follow public health guidance as efforts continue to contain the outbreak and minimise further loss of life.
