Young Man Killed by Train in Dhaka’s Mahakhali

An 18-year-old mechanic was killed after being struck by a train in the Mahakhali area of the capital on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Imran Hossain, 18, son of Jamal Hossain from Kamarpukur village in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon. Imran lived with his family in the Arjatpara area of Mahakhali and worked as a private car mechanic at a workshop in the locality.

The accident occurred at around 9.30am near the Paglar Pol area of Mahakhali. According to information available so far, Imran was walking along the railway tracks when a train travelling from Kamalapur struck him.

The impact left him with a severe head injury. People at the scene rescued him and initially took him to Ayesha Hospital in Mahakhali for treatment. As his condition was considered serious, he was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further medical care at around 10.30am.

Despite efforts to save him, doctors declared Imran dead at around noon.

An officer at the Dhaka Medical College police camp said the body had been placed in the hospital morgue. The matter had also been reported to the railway police station concerned for further action.

Railway tracks in busy parts of Dhaka are often crossed or used by pedestrians despite the risks posed by moving trains. Such incidents can occur within seconds, leaving little opportunity for a person on or near the tracks to react to an approaching train. Railway authorities and law enforcement agencies routinely discourage pedestrians from walking along active railway lines, which are intended for train movement rather than pedestrian access.

Imran’s death has left his family facing the loss of a young earning member who had been working as a mechanic. The incident also highlights the continuing dangers faced by people who walk along railway corridors in densely populated areas of the capital.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be examined by the relevant railway authorities and police as part of the routine investigation into the death.
