Twenty-Two Arms Stolen From Bogura Police Station Remain Missing
Two years after a violent raid on Bogura Sadar Police Station, law enforcement authorities have failed to trace 22 out of 39 firearms looted during widespread unrest. Despite financial rewards offered by the government for information leading to their recovery, neither members of the public nor security agencies have managed to retrieve the missing armaments or secure their voluntary surrender.
The breach occurred on 5 August 2024, a pivotal day marked by a major political transition that saw former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina flee to India. Taking advantage of the collapse in public order, an armed mob stormed the station situated on Kobi Nazrul Islam Road in Bogura town. Police personnel were evacuated under military escort to safeguard their lives, leaving government premises vulnerable. Attackers subsequently ransacked the station, set fire to facilities, and broke into the armory.
During the rampage, assailants made off with 39 firearms, thousands of live rounds of ammunition, and cartages. Thirty-six of the weapons belonged to Bogura Sadar Police Station, whilst three were assigned to police lines personnel. The stolen arsenal comprised five pistols, twelve rifles, five submachine guns (SMGs) and light machine guns (LMGs), alongside seventeen shotguns.
The devastation extended beyond the armory. Arsonists set fire to four or five police vehicles parked in the courtyard, reducing them to ashes. Furthermore, rioters looted over 200 motorcycles stored on the premises as evidence in various ongoing criminal cases. Similar attacks simultaneously targeted the Sadar Land Office, the Sadar Upazila Council, and the local district office of the Awami League.
Security forces have managed to recover 17 firearms from abandoned locations across the district over time. However, official assessments revealed that several retrieved weapons were damaged beyond repair or rendered completely unusable. The remaining 22 firearms, together with an extensive stockpile of live ammunition, stay unaccounted for in illegal hands.
Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed grave concerns over public safety, fearing that criminal syndicates now possess the military-grade weaponry. Witnesses pointed towards a political figure from the Chelapara area in Bogura town, alleging his direct involvement in leading the raid. Citizens believe a targeted investigation and arrest of this individual could yield critical leads regarding the location of the missing arms, ammunition, and stolen motorbikes.
Civil society representatives have echoed these safety anxieties. Humayun Islam Tuhin, General Secretary of the Bogura chapter of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN), highlighted the lingering dread amongst local communities due to the unchecked availability of arms. He urged the district law enforcement committee and police authorities to offer firm guarantees that comprehensive operations will be launched to retrieve every single missing firearm before organized criminals exploit them to execute severe offences.
Acknowledging the situation, Ibrahim Ali, the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that search drives remain active to locate the outstanding 22 weapons. He expressed optimism about recovering the armaments in due course, though he noted that exact figures regarding the looted ammunition could not be verified immediately owing to his recent posting at the station.
