Police officers in Dhaka have detained six politicians associated with the Jashore unit of the Bangladesh Awami League and its student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, during a clandestine gathering in Gulshan. Officers from Gulshan Police Station raided a restaurant located on the fifth floor of the Police Plaza shopping complex at approximately 9:30 pm on Friday to break up the session.
The individuals taken into custody include Mehdi Masud Chowdhury, General Secretary of the Chaugachha Upazila Awami League, and executive member S. M. Rezwan Habib Alif. Officers also detained Nannu Mia, a former Chhatra League leader; Aminur Rahman Palash, former leader of the Dhaka College Chhatra League unit; Ibrahim Hossain, another former student wing leader; and party activist Sajal Ahmed.
Investigative sources revealed that a larger group of party figures had assembled at the commercial premises to deliberate on organizational restructuring. The attendees were actively drafting new committee structures for the Chaugachha Upazila branch and its constituent union units for the Awami League and its associate bodies. When raiding officers entered the eatery, several attendees managed to flee the scene in the ensuing panic, leaving six behind who were swiftly apprehended.
Daud Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Gulshan Police Station, confirmed that detectives executed the operation after receiving verified intelligence regarding the unauthorized assembly. He noted that the group had gathered to finalize committee details and was preparing to organize an unpermitted public procession in the capital shortly after concluding their discussions.
Law enforcement officials highlighted that gathering in an upmarket shopping mall in Gulshan was an intentional attempt to evade surveillance by capital authorities. Legal proceedings against the six detained individuals are currently underway at Gulshan Police Station. Officers are questioning the suspects to determine the identities of those who escaped during the raid and to evaluate potential charges linked to public order offences.
