Young winger Farhan Ali Wahid, currently preparing for his prospective international debut with Bangladesh, has missed out on an anticipated on-pitch encounter against fellow Bangladeshi-origin star Hamza Choudhury. The duo were scheduled to face each other in England during an upcoming EFL Trophy fixture between Fulham Under-21s and Leicester City. However, a sudden transfer move has altered those plans.
The scheduled clash between Leicester City and Fulham U21s was set for 22 September. Football enthusiasts in Bangladesh were keenly awaiting the match, expecting Choudhury to represent Leicester while Wahid featured for Fulham. That head-to-head spectacle will no longer take place following Fulham’s decision to sanction a temporary move for the teenager.
Just two weeks after making his senior debut for Fulham, the West London club agreed a season-long loan deal sending Wahid to Boreham Wood, a side competing in the fifth tier of English football. The loan aims to offer the 18-year-old winger consistent first-team minutes and competitive senior experience in the National League.
Wahid marked his first-team breakthrough for Fulham on 25 July during a pre-season friendly against Norwich City. His promising displays earned him further pre-season outings against Al-Ahli and Faroese opposition, leading many observers to believe he might remain part of Fulham’s immediate squad plans for the upcoming campaign. Fulham management ultimately opted to accelerate his development through senior football elsewhere.
His new club, Boreham Wood, enjoyed a strong previous campaign, reaching the National League play-off final. The Hertfordshire-based outfit commence their new league season on Saturday with a home fixture against Tamworth, where Wahid could potentially make his competitive debut.
Whilst English domestic football will not see the two players cross paths this September, Bangladeshi supporters may not have to wait long to see them share a pitch. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is actively expediting administrative procedures to integrate Wahid into the national setup ahead of the September FIFA international window. Should those preparations proceed smoothly, Wahid and Choudhury could soon feature together in the attack for the national team during the upcoming SAFF Championship.
