Four More Measles-Related Deaths Reported Across Bangladesh

Four more deaths linked to measles have been registered across Bangladesh in a 24-hour period, health officials confirmed on Saturday. According to a bulletin released by the control room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), two of the fatalities were laboratory-confirmed cases of measles, whilst the remaining two involved patients exhibiting severe clinical symptoms of the viral disease.

The latest figures highlight an ongoing public health concern, with health facilities maintaining heightened surveillance. Over the same 24-hour window, 677 patients presented with measles symptoms, while 99 cases were officially confirmed through diagnostic testing.

Health authorities have been tracking the outbreak closely since mid-March. Between 15 March and 8 August, cumulative figures indicate a total of 135,332 suspected measles cases nationwide, alongside 17,040 laboratory-confirmed infections. Hospitalisation records reflect the heavy pressure placed on healthcare centres during this period, with 117,444 individuals admitted with measles symptoms. On a reassuring note, recovery rates remain high; 113,200 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Child mortality remains a critical focal point of the crisis. Cumulative data covering the period from 15 March to 8 August reveals 769 child deaths attributed to suspected measles symptoms, alongside 98 fatalities confirmed to have been caused directly by the virus.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness spread through respiratory droplets. It presents primarily with high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic skin rash. While preventable through childhood immunization programmes, unvaccinated or under-immunised infants remain especially vulnerable to severe complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and severe dehydration. Public health experts continue to urge parents to ensure children receive their routine Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccinations at local healthcare units.

Government health teams and medical field personnel continue to monitor affected regions to strengthen routine vaccination drives, improve clinical management in hospital isolation wards, and contain localized transmissions.
