Fatal Border Incident: Bangladeshi Youth Killed by BSF in Moulvibazar

In another tragic incident along the international frontier, a 20-year-old Bangladeshi youth was shot and killed by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) near the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar district during the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Tara Miah, was the son of Abdul Malek and resided in the Muraichhara Bosti area within the Karmadha Union of Kulaura Upazila. The lethal shooting took place at around 3:30 am near the Maguruli border point under the Prithimpasha Union.

According to statements released by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 46 Battalion, a group comprising four to five Bangladeshi individuals illegally crossed the frontier, penetrating approximately 500 yards inside Indian territory. A patrolling unit from the BSF’s 199 Battalion, stationed at the Maguruli camp, intercepted the group and opened fire. Tara Miah sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene, whilst the remaining members of the group managed to escape back across the border into Bangladesh.

Speaking on the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud, Commander of the BGB 46 Battalion based in Sreemangal, confirmed that the victim was implicated in cross-border smuggling operations, an assertion that his family members have also acknowledged. Official records indicate that Tara Miah had previously been accused in an illegal smuggling case registered with Kulaura Police Station.

The BSF retrieved the victim’s body from the site of the incident and transported it to the Indian side. BGB officials confirmed that formal legal communications are currently underway between the two border forces to facilitate the repatriation of the body to the family once all required official procedures have been concluded.

Tragic encounters of this nature underscore the ongoing security complexities and human toll along the 4,096-kilometre India-Bangladesh border, where issues surrounding illicit cross-border movement and the use of lethal force remain heavily scrutinised. The area has witnessed repeated instances of violence in recent months; notably, on 12 June, another 20-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mujib Ali, lost his life to BSF gunfire at the Dattagram border in Sharifpur Union, Kulaura. Following that incident, the BGB formally lodged a letter of protest demanding accountability for the fatal shooting, before the victim’s body was eventually returned to his relatives.
