Indian playback singer Sonu Nigam has once again shown his deep attachment to music after singing during a surgical procedure, turning an otherwise tense hospital setting into an unexpected musical moment.
A video recorded at the hospital has circulated widely on social media, showing Nigam singing a popular song by the late legendary singer Mohammed Rafi while medical professionals were attending to him. Despite being in the midst of a medical procedure and experiencing physical discomfort, the singer appeared composed and continued to sing.
The song heard in the video is ‘Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki’, a much-loved classic from the 1949 Hindi film Dulari. Originally performed by Mohammed Rafi, the song remains one of the enduring favourites from the golden era of Hindi film music. Nigam’s rendition during his treatment added an unusual and deeply personal dimension to the moment.
Nigam later shared the hospital video on social media with the caption, “Singing through the pain.” The brief message reflected his determination to remain connected with music even while undergoing treatment.
Surgical procedures can often be accompanied by anxiety, nervousness and physical discomfort. Patients may experience considerable stress before and during treatment, depending on the nature of the procedure and the circumstances surrounding it. Against that backdrop, Nigam’s decision to sing appeared to provide not only a means of keeping himself calm but also an unexpected source of entertainment for the doctors and medical staff present.
The medical team can be heard and seen responding to the singer as he performs. The atmosphere, ordinarily focused entirely on clinical care, appeared to take on a lighter character as Nigam continued with the familiar melody.
The incident quickly attracted attention from his fans, many of whom praised the singer for maintaining a positive outlook during a difficult moment. For admirers of Indian music, the choice of a Mohammed Rafi classic was also significant, given Rafi’s enduring influence on generations of singers.
Nigam has long been recognised for his versatility and his ability to perform across a wide range of musical styles. His connection with classic Hindi film songs has also featured prominently throughout his career. Singing one of Rafi’s best-known songs during a medical procedure therefore offered a striking reminder of how closely music can be intertwined with a performer’s identity.
The viral video has also prompted wider discussion about the emotional role of music during difficult experiences. While music cannot replace medical treatment, it can sometimes provide comfort, distraction and a sense of familiarity during moments of stress.
For Nigam, the episode appeared to be a simple expression of that bond. Even while undergoing treatment, he found a way to return to the thing that has defined much of his life: singing.
