S M Sultan: The Artist Who Painted the Strength of Bengal

Some artists do more than create paintings. Through their colours, lines and forms, they capture the life of a people, the character of a land and the struggles that shape a society. Bangladeshi artist S M Sultan was one such figure. His paintings transformed farmers, fishermen and working people into powerful symbols of strength, dignity and resilience.

Born Sheikh Mohammad Sultan, S M Sultan was popularly known in his childhood as ‘Lal Mia’. He was born on 10 August 1923 in Machimdia village of Narail, into a poor farming family. Growing up close to the soil and the people who depended on it had a lasting influence on his artistic vision.

From an early age, Sultan showed a strong interest in drawing. His opportunities for formal education were limited by his family’s financial circumstances. He enrolled at Narail Victoria Collegiate School in 1928, while also helping his father with work. The hardships of his early life, however, did not prevent him from developing his artistic abilities.

Instead, his close association with rural life became one of the defining elements of his work.

As a young artist, Sultan began by drawing human faces and gradually developed a distinctive approach to portraying the human figure. His artistic journey later took him to Kolkata, where he encountered a wider cultural and artistic environment. His association with art critic Shahid Suhrawardy also played an important role in his development.

During the 1940s, he gained an opportunity to study at the Kolkata Art School. Yet Sultan did not remain confined by conventional academic approaches to art. He gradually developed a visual language of his own, one that was deeply connected with the rural landscape and the people of Bengal.

His paintings were exhibited both in South Asia and abroad. An exhibition of his works was held in Simla in 1946, and his paintings were later displayed in cities including New York, Washington, Chicago, Boston and London. International exposure brought his work to a wider audience, but it did not distance him from his roots.

In 1953, Sultan returned to Narail. His return marked an important phase in his life and work, as he became increasingly immersed in the people, landscape and rural culture that had shaped his imagination from childhood.

The central figures in Sultan’s paintings were often farmers, fishermen and labourers. Unlike conventional portrayals of rural poverty, his workers frequently appeared with unusually large, muscular physiques. Their bodies represented more than physical strength. Through them, Sultan sought to portray the dignity of labour and the immense contribution of ordinary people to the life of the country.

The farmer in Sultan’s paintings was therefore not merely an individual working in a field. He became a representation of the strength of rural Bengal and of the people whose labour sustained society.

Sultan’s contribution extended beyond painting. He had a strong interest in children’s education and sought to create opportunities for them to learn and express themselves creatively. In Narail, he became involved in educational and artistic initiatives, including Nandan Kanan, and later established initiatives such as Shishuswarga and Charupith. These efforts reflected his belief that children should have access not only to conventional education but also to art and creative expression.

His life outside the canvas was equally distinctive. Sultan had an interest in music and could play the flute and other musical instruments. He was also known for his affection for animals and birds, which were a familiar presence around him. His relationship with nature, animals and rural communities formed an important part of his wider outlook on life.

Sultan’s art was never simply an exercise in aesthetic beauty. His paintings carried a broader social and human message. The strength of his farmers and labourers suggested the dignity of those who worked the land, while his depictions of nature reflected his close relationship with the environment.

His contribution to Bangladeshi art was recognised through several major honours. He received the Ekushey Padak in 1982. In 1986, he received an honour from the Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad. In 1993, he was awarded the Independence Award, the country’s highest civilian honour.

Sultan died on 10 October 1994 at the Combined Military Hospital in Jessore. He was later laid to rest in his native Narail, the place that remained closely connected with both his life and artistic identity.

Decades after his death, his work continues to occupy a distinctive place in the history of Bangladeshi art. His monumental farmers, fishermen and labourers remain instantly recognisable, not simply because of their physical form, but because of what they represent: labour, endurance, dignity and the enduring relationship between people and the land.

S M Sultan did not merely paint rural Bengal. He interpreted its people through a deeply personal artistic language. His canvases brought the strength of ordinary working people to the centre of the artistic imagination and gave rural life a powerful visual presence.

On his birth anniversary, Sultan is remembered not only as an acclaimed painter but as an artist whose work remained firmly rooted in the soil, people and culture of Bangladesh.

His legacy lives on through his paintings, his educational initiatives and the distinctive vision he brought to Bangladeshi art. For generations of viewers, the muscular figures on his canvases continue to embody the strength of those whose labour helped build the country.
