A tragedy has struck the village of Talesheo in Cumilla’s Daudkandi upazila, where two two-year-old cousins lost their lives in a drowning accident. The untimely deaths of the toddlers have plunged the entire community into mourning as relatives and neighbours struggle to come to terms with the loss.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, 9 August, at the Miyaji family residence in Talesheo village, situated within Maligaon Union. The deceased toddlers have been identified as Ayan, the son of Ismail Miyaji, and Adil, the son of Jahidur Rahman.
According to local accounts, the two cousins were playing together near their homestead during the late afternoon. Unnoticed by family members, the toddlers wandered towards a body of water adjacent to the house and accidentally slipped in. Upon realising the children were missing, family members launched an urgent search around the premises. They eventually spotted the toddlers submerged in the water and pulled them out unconscious.
Desperate to save them, relatives rushed the boys to the nearby Daudkandi Maligaon 50-Bed Hospital in critical condition. However, medical efforts were in vain. Dr Mosharraf Hossain, the duty officer at the hospital’s emergency department, evaluated the toddlers upon arrival and formally pronounced them dead.
Confirming the incident, Dr Md Al-Amin Miyaji, Superintendent of the Daudkandi Maligaon 50-Bed Hospital, stated that both children were brought to the emergency department on Sunday evening, where clinical examinations confirmed they had already passed away prior to admission.
Law enforcement authorities have also acknowledged the drowning. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Model Police Station, Mohammad Sajedul Islam, confirmed that police received reports regarding the tragedy and officers are currently gathering necessary details to complete standard administrative enquiries.
