Bangladesh’s domestic football infrastructure is on the brink of a major transformation. Official administrative steps are underway to transfer operational control of three major venues—Sylhet District Stadium, Chattogram District Stadium, and the Bir Sherestha Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur—to the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). Under the proposed handover, the national governing body will assume responsibility for playing surfaces, spectator stands, and dressing room facilities. Parallelly, momentum is building around the establishment of a state-of-the-art national training centre in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, funded by FIFA.
BFF President Tabith Awal emphasised that establishing dedicated, high-quality playing venues is indispensable if Bangladesh hopes to raise its competitive standards on the international stage. Discussions with the government alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports have progressed well, though minor bureaucratic delays regarding documentation have prolonged the final handover process. Awal clarified the operational parameters of the agreement, explaining that commercial rights will remain strictly under the purview of the National Sports Council (NSC). Shops located within stadium complexes and their rental revenue will stay with the NSC, whilst the BFF will hold sole management rights over match facilities, galleries, and team rooms.
Progress is also being made regarding the long-anticipated FIFA Excellence Centre in Ramu. Legal procedures to officially transfer land ownership to the BFF are under way. Although initial plans envisioned a 25-acre complex, the government has allocated 15 acres for the project. Once title deeds are fully processed, the BFF intends to collaborate with FIFA technicians to refine structural blueprints. Awal assured stakeholders that whilst land constraints may slightly alter the layout, facility standards will remain uncompromised.
On the competitive front, the national team prepares for a busy autumn schedule. Bangladesh expects to play four international fixtures during the September-October FIFA international windows. Negotiations are ongoing to host a three- or four-nation tournament on home soil, with several member associations invited, whilst a separate invitation for a tri-nation series in Kyrgyzstan remains on the table.
Concurrently, Awal issued a stern warning to senior international players regarding participation in unofficial local tournaments, locally known as “khep” matches. National team players often take part in these exhibition games during the off-season for monetary gain or personal favours. The BFF president urged footballers to maintain strict professional discipline, cautioning against the severe injury risks and reputational damage associated with unapproved matches.
