Apple to Build AI Server Factory in Texas, Add 20,000 U.S. R&D Jobs

Feb 24, 2025 – Apple has announced plans to establish a 250,000-square-foot factory in Texas by 2026, dedicated to assembling artificial intelligence (AI) servers. In addition, the tech giant will add approximately 20,000 research and development (R&D) jobs across the United States, reinforcing its long-term commitment to domestic innovation and manufacturing.

Apple stated that it will invest $500 billion in the U.S. over the next four years, covering a wide range of initiatives, including manufacturing, supplier partnerships, and content production for its Apple TV+ streaming service. However, the company did not specify how much of this investment is designated for AI and cloud infrastructure.

A Strategic Shift in Manufacturing

Apple’s move comes at a time when geopolitical tensions and trade policies are influencing global supply chains. Historically, most of Apple’s products have been assembled outside the U.S., but many key components, such as chips from Broadcom, SkyWorks Solutions, and Qorvo, are still manufactured domestically.

The Texas facility, to be built in collaboration with Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry), will assemble AI servers that support “Apple Intelligence,” the company’s suite of AI-powered features designed to enhance tasks like email drafting and productivity automation. Until now, these servers were manufactured outside the U.S.

Strengthening the U.S. Semiconductor Industry

Apple also announced an expansion of its Advanced Manufacturing Fund, increasing its total commitment from $5 billion to $10 billion. Part of this investment will include a multibillion-dollar agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to produce advanced silicon at TSMC’s Arizona facility.

Apple recently began mass production of its own-designed chips at TSMC’s Arizona plant, a milestone in its effort to reduce reliance on overseas semiconductor production. This initiative aligns with the CHIPS Act, a U.S. government policy aimed at bolstering domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

Investment in Workforce Development

Beyond manufacturing, Apple plans to establish a manufacturing academy in Michigan, where its engineers will collaborate with local universities to offer free courses for small and mid-sized manufacturing firms. The program will focus on project management, process optimization, and advanced manufacturing techniques, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future.

Political and Economic Implications

The announcement follows reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook met with President Donald Trump last week. With the possibility of 10% tariffs on Apple products assembled in China, the company may be strategically shifting some production to the U.S. to mitigate risks.

Trump publicly acknowledged Apple’s decision, stating in a Truth Social post that it reflects the company’s confidence in his administration. This echoes a previous Apple commitment during Trump’s first term, when the company pledged $350 billion in U.S. investments over five years.
