United Nations, United States, Feb 25, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – The United States has welcomed what it calls a “landmark agreement” at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after successfully securing the adoption of a resolution aimed at achieving “lasting peace” in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
For the first time in three years, the UNSC has passed a resolution on Ukraine with backing from both Washington and Moscow—a significant diplomatic breakthrough given the prolonged deadlock between the two powers over the war.
Following the resolution’s adoption, US envoy to the UN Dorothy Shea urged all UN member states to support efforts to establish a durable peace.
“We call on all other UN member states to join the United States in pushing for a durable peace that will bring stability to Europe and deter further aggression,” Shea stated.
She emphasized that the Security Council’s approval of the resolution marks a crucial step toward ending hostilities and fostering stability in the region. “We are proud that the Security Council has done just that, just now, in passing a historic landmark agreement on Ukraine,” she added.
The agreement represents a rare moment of cooperation between the US and Russia at the UN, which had previously been deeply divided over the Ukraine conflict. Analysts view the resolution as a potential starting point for more extensive negotiations, though significant challenges remain in achieving a lasting settlement.
The passage of this resolution marks a notable step forward in addressing the conflict, but the true test lies ahead in its implementation and whether both sides adhere to its principles for long-term peace.
