Two Young Men Beaten Over Theft Suspicion, One Dies

Two young men were allegedly beaten and subjected to physical abuse after being suspected of theft in Joypurhat’s Khetlal upazila, leaving one dead and the other unconscious. The incident occurred in the Mahabbatpur Padmapukur area of Mamudpur Union, where police later recovered the body of Lal Badshah, 18, and rescued his friend Maidul, also 18, alive.

Lal Badshah was the son of Jamal of Alampur Adarsha Gram in Alampur Union of Khetlal upazila. Maidul is the son of Ibrahim, from the same area. According to local sources, the two were friends.

Police and residents said the incident came to light on Saturday morning after local people noticed the two youths lying near a field in the Mahabbatpur Padmapukur area. They informed Khetlal police, who arrived at the scene and found Lal Badshah dead. Maidul was found alive but in an unconscious and severely weakened condition.

Police took Maidul to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex, where he received initial medical treatment. After regaining consciousness, he reportedly told police that several people had approached the two youths near a petrol station in the Jamanalganj Char Matha area. The men allegedly took them to a house, where they were beaten and subjected to physical abuse. The two were later taken to an area beside a field and left there.

Maidul reportedly told police that he would be able to identify the people involved if he saw them again. His account is expected to form part of the investigation as officers work to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.

Members of Lal Badshah’s family said he had a physical disability and suffered from poor eyesight. Maidul’s family also claimed that he had some difficulties with cognitive functioning. These circumstances have added to concerns over the vulnerability of the two youths and the circumstances in which they were allegedly targeted.

Police have so far indicated that the youths may have been attacked after being suspected of involvement in theft. However, officers have not yet confirmed whether any theft actually occurred, nor have they established who initiated the alleged assault or what prompted it.

Khetlal police station officer-in-charge Muktarul Alam said officers responded after receiving information and recovered one youth dead and the other alive from the scene. He said the preliminary assessment suggested that the pair might have been beaten after being suspected of theft.

The police are examining Maidul’s statement and other available information to identify those allegedly involved. Investigators will also need to determine where the assault took place, how long the youths were held and whether injuries sustained during the alleged beating caused Lal Badshah’s death.

The body of Lal Badshah is being prepared for post-mortem examination. Police said the autopsy report should provide important evidence about the precise cause of death and help establish whether the injuries were consistent with an assault.

The incident has raised concerns over the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands. Even when theft or other wrongdoing is suspected, allegations must be investigated through lawful procedures rather than dealt with through violence. The police investigation will now determine the facts and whether criminal charges should be brought against those responsible.
