Stars Remember Bangabandhu with Messages of Grief and Respect

Several Bangladeshi entertainment figures have taken to social media to remember Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August, expressing grief and respect for the country’s founding leader and reflecting on the continuing debate surrounding his place in Bangladesh’s history.

15 August marks the 51st anniversary of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. On this day in 1975, he was killed at his residence on Dhanmondi Road 32 in Dhaka, along with most members of his family. The assassination remains one of the most consequential and traumatic episodes in Bangladesh’s political history.

For years under successive Awami League governments, 15 August was observed officially as National Mourning Day. State and party organisations arranged a range of programmes, including mourning processions, prayers, religious gatherings, discussions and community meals. Government institutions also held commemorative events to mark the anniversary.

The political landscape changed sharply after 5 August 2024, however, and the day has not been observed through the same level of official programmes as in previous years. Despite that change, several prominent figures from Bangladesh’s cultural and entertainment sectors have continued to use social media to share their personal reflections on the anniversary.

Actress Jaya Ahsan posted a photograph of herself with a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In her accompanying message, she remembered Bangabandhu with grief and respect, simply referring to 15 August as a day of remembrance.

Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon offered a considerably longer reflection, focusing on the way history can be interpreted differently according to political circumstances and competing narratives. She said the July uprising of 2024 had led her to think more deeply about how historical events can be altered, reinterpreted or presented through particular political perspectives.

Badhon said she did not want to make definitive judgements about history based solely on a single narrative. At the same time, she stressed that there could be no denial of the brutality and injustice involved in the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the family members who died with him.

According to her argument, political disagreements or competing interpretations of history should never diminish the value of human life, nor can they provide justification for violence. She also acknowledged Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s early political role and contribution to the struggle that culminated in Bangladesh’s emergence as an independent country. At the same time, she argued that history should be examined through evidence, context and a willingness to accommodate critical perspectives.

Actor Arsh Khan also shared a photograph of Bangabandhu and posted a personal message expressing his prayers for the former leader’s soul.

Actress Nazia Haque Orsha, who was vocal during the July uprising, also posted a photograph of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Her caption consisted of a brief reference to Bangladesh, leaving the message open to interpretation.

A number of other figures from the entertainment industry also marked the occasion on social media. Among them were actors Chanchal Chowdhury, Milon Bhattacharya, Nazifa Tushi, Mahiya Mahi, Aruna Biswas, Tusti, Tanvin Sweety and Doyel. Singers Konal and Pantho Kanai also shared messages relating to 15 August.

Directors Gias Uddin Selim, Dipankar Dipon and Mezbaur Rahman Sumon were among other cultural figures who expressed grief and respect through social media posts.

The reactions vary in tone and emphasis. Some are direct expressions of mourning, while others attempt to place the events of 1975 within a broader discussion about Bangladesh’s political history and the changing ways in which that history is interpreted.

Taken together, the messages demonstrate that the legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the events of 15 August remain subjects of strong public interest within Bangladesh’s cultural sphere, even as the country’s political circumstances and official approach to commemorating the anniversary have changed significantly in recent years.
