Man Killed in Mob Beating over Alleged Cattle Theft in Gazipur

A man has died and three others have been seriously injured in a mob beating over alleged cattle theft in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 22 July, in Ramchandrapur village, located in the Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur district.

The deceased has been identified as:

  • Md. Shanto Islam (21), a resident of Baluchar area, Madhabdi upazila, Narsingdi.

Approximately 3:45 AM A group of suspected thieves entered the cowshed of Shamsuddin Mollah in Ramchandrapur.
Owner’s Reaction Shamsuddin, sleeping in a nearby room, was awakened by noise and witnessed the break-in.
Alarm Raised He alerted the village using the mosque loudspeaker system.
Mob Gathers & Chases Suspects Locals responded swiftly and pursued the alleged thieves.
Four Men Caught Villagers apprehended four suspects.
Mob Beating Ensues In a fit of anger, the crowd beat the captives, resulting in Shanto Islam’s death on the spot.

 

Police Response and Medical Aid

The Kaliganj police arrived at the scene around 7:30 AM. The three surviving suspects were taken into custody and immediately transferred to receive medical attention.

  • First stop: Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex (for initial treatment)
  • Then referred to: Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment

The deceased’s body was recovered and sent to the Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

 

Official Statement

Md. Alauddin, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, stated:

“Locals detained four individuals on suspicion of cattle theft and beat them. One has died as a result. Legal proceedings are currently underway.”
