Chandina Volunteer League Secretary Detained in Broad Police Drive

Law enforcement officials in Cumilla have taken Ashikul Islam Ashik Khan, the general secretary of the Chandina Upazila Volunteer League, into custody. The police operation took place on the evening of Friday, 14 August, when officers intercepted and arrested him at the Dollai Nawabpur market location in Chandina. Ashik Khan, an influential local leader of the ruling party’s affiliate body, is the son of Md Monirul Islam, hailing from the Barkarai area within the same upazila.

Providing official details of the arrest, Md Nuruzzaman, the officer-in-charge at Chandina Police Station, confirmed that the suspect was apprehended in relation to an active investigation into an earlier case. He noted that law enforcement completed the mandatory primary legal formalities before producing the politician in court for further judicial proceedings.

Nationwide Security Surge Ahead of 15 August

This high-profile arrest forms part of a much broader, intensive administrative crackdown executed by security forces across the country in the run-up to 15 August. Security measures and operational alertness have been significantly heightened nationwide, resulting in a series of coordinated raids targeting members and leaders of the Awami League alongside its subsidiary groups, such as the Volunteer League.

Within the capital city of Dhaka alone, security personnel have held approximately 2,000 political workers over a 72-hour period. The sweep has drawn attention due to assertions from various local sources that several individuals have been picked up pre-emptively without explicit charges or specific active cases lodged against them.
