First Wedding Anniversary Ends in Tragedy for Newlywed

A young woman was killed and her husband seriously injured when a speeding lorry struck their motorbike as they were travelling to her father’s home on their first wedding anniversary in Rangpur.

The deceased, 20-year-old Liza Akter, was the daughter of businessman Lavlu Mia of Guabari village in Pirgachha upazila. Her husband, Shamim Mia, is a resident of Baman Sardar village in Anondanagar Union.

The accident occurred at around 8pm on Saturday in the Kalistan area of the Satdargah–Rangpur road in Pirgachha. According to police and local residents, the couple had been travelling by motorbike to Liza’s parental home when a lorry coming from the opposite direction reportedly hit them at high speed.

Both Liza and Shamim sustained serious injuries in the collision. Local residents rushed to their aid and began taking them to Pirgachha Upazila Health Complex. Liza, however, died on the way to the hospital.

Shamim was in a critical condition and was subsequently transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

The journey had carried particular emotional significance for the couple as they were travelling to Liza’s father’s home for the first time after their marriage. The fact that the crash occurred on their first wedding anniversary made the incident especially distressing for both families.

Road accidents involving motorcycles and heavy vehicles remain a serious concern on busy regional roads, particularly where vehicles travel at high speeds and road users have limited protection in the event of a collision. Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable because even a single impact with a heavy vehicle can result in fatal injuries.

Following the crash, local people managed to stop and detain the lorry involved. The driver and helper, however, reportedly fled the scene before they could be apprehended.

Pirgachha police said the lorry had been taken into custody after the accident. Officer-in-Charge Selim Malik said legal proceedings were under way in connection with the incident.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a joyful family occasion. Liza’s death has left her family mourning on a day that was expected to mark a milestone in the young couple’s married life, while Shamim remains under treatment with serious injuries.
