Twelve Dead as Polish Tourist Bus Overturns in Hungary

A catastrophic road accident in eastern Hungary left at least twelve people dead and dozens injured in the early hours of Sunday, 16 August, after a tourist bus travelling from Serbia to Poland veered off a major motorway and overturned into a roadside ditch. The vehicle, carrying dozens of holidaymakers returning home from southern Europe, lost control near the town of Mezőkövesd before crashing through safety barriers.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims in a statement issued on Sunday morning, praising emergency personnel for their rapid and decisive response at the scene.

According to state news agency MTI, the Polish-registered coach was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers when the disaster occurred along the M3 motorway in the direction of Nyíregyháza. Emergency responders arriving at the site encountered a scene of widespread destruction. Pictures from the crash site showed the red long-distance coach resting on its side in a steep embankment, its windows shattered, with personal luggage, clothing, and suitcases strewn across the surrounding countryside.

Data released by the National Directorate General for Disaster Management confirmed that eleven passengers died instantly at the scene of the crash, whilst a twelfth victim succumbed to severe injuries after being transported to a nearby medical facility. National ambulance services reported that a further 37 passengers sustained varying degrees of injury. Several individuals remained trapped inside the wreckage until firefighters and rescue crews used specialized heavy machinery and cutting gear to extract them through the smashed windows.

Police authorities investigating the incident noted that the vehicle drifted off a straight section of the highway without any initial collision with another vehicle. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the driver on duty may have fallen asleep at the wheel during the early morning hours, causing the vehicle to leave the road at high speed. Law enforcement officers have officially taken the driver into custody to assist with ongoing criminal inquiries.

In Warsaw, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed on social media that consular teams had been dispatched to coordinate with Hungarian authorities and support surviving passengers and grieving relatives. Polish President Karol Nawrocki described the disaster as an overwhelming tragedy, extending his profound sympathies to the families affected.

The fatal crash marks Hungary’s deadliest road transport accident in over two decades. The country had not witnessed a comparable disaster on its road network since 2003, when a German tourist bus was struck by a passenger train near the resort town of Siófok, resulting in 33 fatalities.
