Rodri to Join Barcelona Following £58m Agreement With City

Barcelona have reached a comprehensive agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of world-class midfielder Rodri. The deal for the 30-year-old Spain captain is valued at approximately $76.5 million (£58 million / €71.5 million), which translates to around 10.63 billion Bangladeshi taka. An official confirmation from both clubs is expected within the coming days once final paperwork is processed.

The high-profile acquisition arrives shortly after Rodri’s triumphant campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in July, where he captained Spain to a victory over Argentina in the final. His exceptional dictation of play throughout the tournament earned him the Golden Ball award as the competition’s outstanding player. While Real Madrid were also strongly linked with the midfielder, Rodri ultimately elected to join their fierce rivals in Catalonia.

Rodri leaves an indelible legacy at Etihad Stadium following his move from Atlético Madrid in 2019. Serving as the cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s system, he lifted 12 major trophies during his spell in England, including four Premier League titles and the 2023 UEFA Champions League—a match in which he scored the winning goal. His supreme individual achievements culminated in winning the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Despite facing persistent injury challenges over the past two seasons, he remains widely regarded as the pinnacle of modern defensive midfield play.

The urgent pursuit by Barcelona stems from severe mid-field depth issues, particularly following a long-term injury to Dutch playmaker Frenkie de Jong. Seeking an elite anchor to stabilize the squad, manager Hansi Flick prioritized the Spaniard. Manchester City initially turned down two separate offers before finalizing terms over the weekend after the player expressed a strong desire to return to La Liga.
