One Killed, Four Injured in Separate Demra Road Crashes

One person was killed and four others were injured in two separate road accidents in Demra, Dhaka, late on Sunday night.

The accidents occurred at different locations within the Demra police station area within roughly an hour of each other, leaving one motorcyclist dead and four people requiring hospital treatment.

According to Demra police, the first accident took place at around 11pm beneath the Sufia Kamal Bridge, near Demra Police Station. Saiful Islam, 35, was riding a motorcycle when a covered van struck him. He sustained critical injuries in the collision and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police said Saiful was taken to the hospital at around 2.15am. Doctors on duty subsequently declared him dead.

Saiful worked as a ride-sharing driver for Pathao and was originally from the Narsingdi area. His body was placed in the hospital morgue, where the necessary procedures were expected to be carried out.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Saddam of Demra Police Station said police had seized the covered van involved in the crash and detained its driver for questioning. The circumstances surrounding the collision were being examined as part of the investigation.

The second accident occurred at approximately midnight in the Mastumajhi area of Demra, close to a police checkpoint. A sand-carrying lorry and another covered van collided at the location, injuring four people.

The injured were identified as Russell Mia, 35, Rezaul Karim, 25, Mohammad Shahjahan, 32, and Farhad, 42. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 3am for medical attention.

Inspector Mohammad Faruk of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost said the four injured people were receiving treatment in the emergency department.

The two crashes highlight the risks faced by motorists and commercial vehicle operators on busy roads in the capital, particularly at night when heavy vehicles, poor visibility and high speeds can increase the severity of collisions. Areas around bridges, checkpoints and major transport routes can be especially vulnerable when different categories of vehicles share limited road space.

Police involvement in both incidents is expected to help establish how the collisions occurred and whether negligence, excessive speed or other factors contributed to them. The first case has already resulted in the seizure of the vehicle and detention of its driver, while the condition of the four injured people remains under medical observation.
