Police have recovered the body of a 24-year-old female garment worker from a rented apartment in the Konabari Parijat area of Gazipur Metropolitan early on Monday morning. Investigators suspect she was strangled to death by her husband following a bitter domestic dispute, after which the accused fled the scene.
The victim has been identified as Rokeya, daughter of Tara Miah hailing from Hariyaguni village in the Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh district. She resided in a rented room belonging to local landlord Hafizur Rahman alongside her 27-year-old husband, Arif. Rokeya worked at a local garment factory in Konabari, while the couple managed their household in the industrial hub.
According to family members, the couple married seven years ago after a romantic relationship. However, domestic friction began shortly after their marriage, leading to frequent arguments and a gradual deterioration of their relationship over the years.
Tensions mounted on Sunday morning when a heated quarrel broke out between the two. Police suspect that the altercation escalated severely between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, during which Arif allegedly choked his wife to death before locking the premises and absconding.
Neighbours and fellow tenants grew suspicious when Rokeya failed to emerge from her room by 10:00 pm on Sunday night. Receiving no response despite repeated calls, local residents alerted the authorities. Officers from the Konabari Police Station arrived at the location in the early hours of Monday, 17 August, and discovered Rokeya’s body inside the room.
Following an inquest report prepared at the scene, the body was dispatched to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
Iftekhar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Konabari Police Station, confirmed that preliminary evidence indicates death by asphyxiation, noting visible injury marks on the victim’s neck. He stated that police teams have launched an operation to trace and arrest the absconding husband, whilst the victim’s family is preparing to file a formal murder case.
