Chairman Murder Accused Arrested in Dubai, Brought Back to Bangladesh

One of the key accused in the murder case of Harunur Rashid Khan — Chairman of Shibpur Upazila Parishad and President of the Shibpur unit of the Awami League in Narsingdi — has been arrested in Dubai and brought back to Bangladesh with the help of Interpol. The accused, Mohsin Mia, has now become the 17th person arrested in connection with the high-profile case.

At a press conference on Thursday, 24 July, SM Mostain Hossain, Superintendent of Police of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Narsingdi, confirmed the development.

The PBI launched its investigation into the assassination on 23 June 2023. During the early stages of the probe, it was discovered that Mohsin Mia had fled the country to Dubai. Subsequently, a Red Notice was issued through Interpol, leading to his arrest by Dubai authorities.

Following his capture, a Bangladesh Police team travelled to Dubai and brought him back to the country on Sunday. Upon his return, Mohsin was presented before the court on 21 July, where he gave a confessional statement. He is a resident of Purbo Syednagar in the Putia Union of Shibpur Upazila.

According to the complaint, Mohsin Mia, along with two accomplices, carried out the shooting at Harunur Rashid Khan’s residence on the night of 25 February 2023. Severely injured, Harunur was taken to a hospital in Dhaka, where he remained under treatment for 94 days before succumbing to his injuries on 31 May 2023.

Since the murder, law enforcement has arrested 17 individuals believed to be connected to the attack, and the case remains under active investigation.
