Narsingdi Man Arrested for Murder and Burial of Wife

Police in Narsingdi have arrested a man following the tragic killing and subsequent clandestine burial of his wife, Hosne Ara Begum, in the Madhwadi area.

The suspect, identified as forty-two-year-old Sharif Mia, was taken into custody on Wednesday night from his father-in-law’s residence in Noakanda village, located within the Kathalia Union. The victim, thirty-nine-year-old Hosne Ara Begum, was the daughter of local resident Md Rahman Mia. Sharif worked at a tea stall near the Madhwadi cattle market, while the couple resided in the Bhagirathpur area.

According to statements provided by the Madhwadi police station, investigators pieced together the grim sequence of events following Sharif’s interrogation. On the night of August 17, at approximately 8:00 pm, a domestic dispute erupted between the couple. During the altercation, Sharif reportedly struck his wife, causing her to fall heavily against a tubewell and lose consciousness. Rather than seeking urgent medical attention for the severely injured woman, he concealed her body inside their home.

The following night, August 18, under the cover of darkness after 10:00 pm, Sharif carried his wife’s body on his shoulders to a nearby local graveyard, where he buried her in secret before returning home. To deflect suspicion, he spun a false narrative to neighbours and relatives, claiming that his wife had left the house in anger and abandoned him.

The deception unravelled the next day on August 19. Around midday, Sharif brazenly accompanied his father-in-law to the Madhwadi police station, attempting to lodge a formal missing person station diary. However, his erratic behavior, nervous disposition, and inconsistent statements immediately aroused the suspicions of the duty officers. Police declined to file the routine diary and instead instructed him to submit a formal complaint.

Sharif returned to his father-in-law’s home with the complaint, unaware that law enforcement was already closing in. Acting on growing intuition, a police team tracked him to the village and brought him into custody for rigorous questioning. Under persistent interrogation, Sharif finally broke down and confessed to the murder, detailing how he disposed of the body.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Kamal Hossain of Madhwadi police station confirmed the breakthrough. He noted that the husband’s suspicious demeanor at the station two days after the crime prompted officers to keep him under close observation. Following his confession, police secured the burial site. Authorities confirmed that an executive magistrate was scheduled to arrive at the scene to oversee the formal exhumation of the remains for a post-mortem examination.

Domestic violence and the subsequent concealment of crimes remain critical challenges for local law enforcement across rural and semi-urban communities in Bangladesh. Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation, stating that legal proceedings will advance swiftly once the forensic evidence and autopsy reports are formally filed.
