In the world of Bengali music, there are certain individuals who live on in the hearts of generation after generation, even without ever lending their own voices to a song. One such luminary is Gouri Prasanna Majumdar—a shining star in the firmament of Bengali lyricism whose pen gave a unique voice to love, separation, longing, heartache, and the deepest emotions of human life.
Gouri Prasanna Majumdar was born on 5 December 1924 in Gopalnagar village, located in the Faridpur sub-district of Pabna. His father, Girija Prasanna Majumdar, was a distinguished professor at Presidency College and a renowned botanist. In his childhood, Gouri Prasanna was deeply drawn to sports. As he grew older, a profound passion for painting blossomed within him. Eventually, poetry and songwriting became the primary pillars of his creative journey. He also trained in vocal music under the tutelage of Anupam Ghatak.
During his student years at Presidency College, his song “Bondu Go Ei Madhumas” caught the attention of the legendary artist Sachin Dev Burman, who composed the music and recorded it himself. This marked his auspicious entry into the world of Bengali music as a lyricist, after which the brilliance of his talent radiated far and wide.
Moving beyond gramophone records, he soon transitioned into Bengali cinema, penning one timeless classic after another. His lyrics for iconic films such as Agni Pariksha, Pathe Hola Deri, Harano Sur, Saptapadi, Deya Neya, and Marutirtha Hinglaj secured an enduring place in the hearts of listeners.
The greatest strength of his songwriting lay in the simple yet profound expression of human emotion. The sweetness of love, the anguish of separation, the quietness of pride, or the pain of parting from a loved one—he articulated every nuance in words so effortless, evocative, and touching that his songs transcended music to become an integral part of people’s personal experiences.
Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, Gouri Prasanna Majumdar’s pen was an indispensable presence in Bengali film music and modern songs alike. He also shared a deep, genuine friendship with the eminent academic and lyricist Dr. Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal.
Following a courageous decade-long battle with cancer, he passed away on 20 August 1986. Yet, the physical departure of a true creator never signifies the death of their art. Gouri Prasanna Majumdar endures to this day through the immortal lines of his songs, in the sighs of lovers, the tears of the heartbroken, and the cherished memories of countless listeners.
He has departed, but his music remains.
The stars of his creation continue to shine in the sky of Bengali song; and as long as human beings fall in love, weep in separation, and revisit their memories, the lyrics of Gouri Prasanna Majumdar will echo in human hearts.
