Three Children Succumb to Measles Symptoms as Cases Surge
Three more children have died from suspected measles symptoms across the country in the past twenty-four hours, while 1,072 new infections—comprising both symptomatic and laboratory-confirmed cases—were logged during the same period. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released these latest figures in a press bulletin on Thursday, 20 August, highlighting the persistent public health challenge posed by the highly contagious viral disease.
Data provided by health authorities indicates that 1,004 individuals were identified with measles symptoms over the last day. This brings the cumulative total of symptomatic cases recorded between 15 March and 20 August to 146,715. Laboratory testing confirmed an additional 68 positive cases in the last 24 hours, raising the national tally of laboratory-confirmed measles cases to 18,144 over the five-month reporting window.
Healthcare facilities nationwide continue to manage a substantial influx of pediatric patients suffering from measles-related complications. A total of 128,026 patients displaying symptoms were admitted to medical facilities between 15 March and 20 August. Hospital discharge records show that 123,684 patients recovered and returned home during the same timeframe following medical treatment.
The human toll remains severe, particularly among young children. Fatalities attributed to suspected measles symptoms reached 826 between 15 March and 20 August, with the latest three deaths adding to the grim tally. While no new deaths were recorded among laboratory-confirmed cases over the past 24 hours, official data confirms that 99 patients with lab-verified measles have succumbed to the disease since mid-March.
Health professionals stress that measles remains a severe, airborne viral infection that primarily affects malnourished or unimmunized children. Left untreated, it can lead to fatal complications such as severe pneumonia, encephalitis, and severe dehydration. Public health officials continue to urge parents to ensure their children receive routine immunizations and seek prompt medical attention at local healthcare centres upon noticing fever, skin rashes, or respiratory distress.
