A long-standing feud between two rival local factions erupted into violent gun violence on Friday afternoon in Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur upazila, leaving two men wounded by gunfire as worshippers made their way to the local mosque for weekly Friday prayers.
The clash broke out around 12:30 pm in the village of Shaharpara (Narayanpur), situated within the Syedpur-Shaharpara Union. The gunfire caused immediate panic throughout the locality, disrupting the peaceful congregation of residents heading to attend the Jummah service.
Those injured by gunfire have been identified as 70-year-old Abdul Hakim, a resident of Narayanpur village, and 30-year-old Misbah Uddin, son of Jilu Ali from the neighbouring village of Tilak. Both sustained bullet wounds during the melee and were rushed by bystanders to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for urgent surgical treatment and medical care.
According to police and local residents, deep-seated animosity had been brewing between Russel Mia, son of Siraj Mia, and Atab Mia, son of the late Andur Mia, both hailing from Narayanpur village. The persistent enmity between the two households flared up openly on the village pathway as supporters of both sides crossed paths ahead of the prayer congregation. Verbal altercations rapidly escalated into a direct physical confrontation, culminating in live firearms being discharged. During the chaos, Abdul Hakim and Misbah Uddin, both aligned with Atab Mia’s faction, were struck by bullets.
Upon receiving emergency reports of gunfire and public disturbance, a contingent from the Jagannathpur police station was dispatched to the scene to quell the violence, disperse the crowds, and restore order in the area.
Confirming the details of the incident, Jagannathpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam stated that law enforcement personnel responded promptly to the disturbance and brought the situation firmly under control. While no formal written complaint had been lodged by either party at the time of reporting, authorities have launched an investigation into the confrontation and are actively assessing the circumstances surrounding the use of illegal firearms. Additional policing remains vigilant in the locality to prevent any retaliatory aggression.
