A 45-year-old man died after sustaining a gunshot wound inside a house in Chattogram’s Double Mooring area on Saturday morning, with police saying initial information indicated that he had shot himself.
The deceased was identified as Shahid Hossain, a resident of Hajipara in the Double Mooring area. The incident took place at the home of a man named Imam Hossain in Hajipara. Shahid was critically injured and taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital at around 7.50am.
After being brought to the hospital, he was admitted to Ward 28 under the supervision of the attending doctors. Despite receiving treatment, he later died in hospital.
People who brought Shahid to the hospital told hospital authorities that he had allegedly shot himself with a pistol while inside the drawing room of the house. According to the information provided to the hospital, the gunshot struck his head.
Double Mooring Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Gafur Mia said the preliminary information suggested that Shahid had died from a gunshot fired by himself. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and examining where the firearm came from.
The police investigation is expected to focus on several aspects of the incident, including the ownership and source of the pistol, the circumstances in which the weapon was available to Shahid, and what happened immediately before the shooting. Investigators may also seek statements from family members, residents of the house and others who were present or reached the scene shortly after the incident.
The exact reason behind the shooting has not yet been established. Police have not indicated that they have reached a final conclusion about the circumstances of the death, and the investigation remains under way.
Shahid was the son of the late Iqbal Hossain and Momtaz Begum. He had worked for a bank several years ago but left the job about two years before the incident. Details of his activities and occupation after leaving the banking job were not immediately available.
As the incident occurred inside a residential property, investigators are also expected to establish a clear sequence of events leading up to the shooting. Determining whether the firearm belonged to Shahid or had been obtained from another source will be a significant part of the inquiry.
Police are continuing to investigate the matter, while further information from the investigation and other formal procedures may help establish the circumstances surrounding Shahid Hossain’s death.
