Musician Rehan Rasul has joined forces with Australian expatriate singer Rapti Sarwat to deliver a fresh original Bengali track titled ‘Durotto’ (Distance). Composed and penned by Rasul, the song features musical arrangements by Tasnuv Nawal, bringing together two distinct vocal styles in a contemporary duet.
Rasul has steadily carved out a distinctive identity within the contemporary Bengali music industry, recognised for his idiosyncratic vocal delivery, expressive composition, and thoughtful lyrical arrangements. He first broke through to widespread public attention in 2018 with the viral track ‘Baje Shobhab’. He consolidated his reputation through a sequence of original releases, including ‘Rupkotha’, ‘Ochena Shohor’, ‘Onyorokom Khun’, and ‘Hi’. Beyond standalone singles, Rasul made an impact on the film circuit with ‘Ashbe Amar Din’ from the blockbuster cinema release ‘Toofan’, visualised on screen by Shakib Khan. His playback performance on ‘Mayapakhi’, the title track for a popular television drama, earned similar critical acclaim.
Sarwat brings a rich classical foundation and an intriguing dual career to the project. A medical doctor by profession based in Brisbane, she serves as a general practitioner and holds a fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Parallel to her medical career, her engagement with music stretches back to early childhood.
Her formative years saw her enlisted as a child artiste on Bangladesh Betar, performing Nazrul Sangeet, patriotic tracks, and folk genres, before subsequently earning accreditation as a Nazrul Sangeet performer on Bangladesh Television. She credits much of her vocal discipline to the late Ekushey Padak-winning maestro Sudhin Das, a revered archivist and exponent of authentic Nazrul melodies. Sarwat trained extensively at ‘Agnibeena’, the music academy founded by Das, where rigorous institutional grounding shaped her technique.
Following a prolonged hiatus from active performance, Sarwat resumed her artistic pursuits after relocating to Australia. She now performs regularly across local cultural stages and releases cover versions on her YouTube channel, where renditions of classics such as ‘Bimurto Ei Rati Amar’, ‘Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi’, and ‘Eka Achi To Ki Hoyeche’ have garnered an appreciative following. ‘Durotto’ marks her official debut with an original Bengali composition, opening a new chapter in her musical journey.
Describing the essence of the collaboration, Rasul explained that the lyric represents a dialogue between Bengali music, authentic melodies, and the lived emotional realities of the Bangladeshi diaspora. The duet pairs Rasul’s modern indie sensibilities with Sarwat’s classically honed technique. ‘Durotto’ is scheduled for official release early next month across digital platforms, premiering on Sarwat’s official YouTube channel.
