Bangladesh Set to Compete in FIFA ASEAN Cup

Bangladesh have secured a last-minute opportunity to compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup Division One in Indonesia after the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) approved the national team’s participation. The decision came after India withdrew from the tournament, opening the door for Bangladesh to take their place.

Bangladesh had expressed interest in joining the competition following India’s withdrawal, but their participation depended on formal approval from FIFA. That approval has now been secured, with the BFF executive committee confirming the decision at its latest meeting.

The FIFA-funded tournament will be held in Indonesia from 24 September to 4 October. Eight teams will compete, divided into two groups of four. Bangladesh have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, giving the national side the opportunity to face three established teams from the region.

The tournament is particularly valuable for Bangladesh because of the international match exposure it will provide. Regardless of their position in the group, each participating side is guaranteed four matches. After the group stage, the two group winners will meet in the final, while the runners-up will play for third place. The teams finishing third in their respective groups will contest the fifth-place match, while the fourth-placed sides will meet to determine seventh place.

This structure means Bangladesh will have the chance to play four competitive international matches rather than returning home after only the group stage. For a national team preparing for the SAFF Championship in November, the additional fixtures could prove significant.

Bangladesh will also not have to shoulder the full financial burden of participation. The tournament organisers will cover the participating teams’ travel and accommodation expenses and will also provide financial support for taking part. This has made the opportunity particularly attractive to the BFF.

India’s withdrawal was prompted by their scheduled friendly against Brazil in Kolkata on 3 October. With that match taking place during the ASEAN Cup, India opted to pull out of the tournament. Bangladesh subsequently moved to fill the vacant position.

The competition will also influence Bangladesh’s domestic football calendar. The national team are scheduled to begin their preparations for the tournament on 27 August. The BFF has already adjusted the domestic season partly to accommodate the national team’s preparations.

Under the revised schedule, the Bangladesh Football League is due to begin on 18 September, followed by the Federation Cup on 22 September. The BFF has informed the clubs of the revised dates. With national-team players expected to join the international camp, domestic clubs will have to prepare for the league without their key internationals during the ASEAN Cup period.

The registration deadline for players has also been extended to 3 September. This means clubs will complete their squad-building process before the national team camp becomes the main focus.

There are also unresolved licensing issues involving Bashundhara Kings and Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club. Both clubs have yet to complete the licensing process because of FIFA-related sanctions. They have been given until 28 August to clear outstanding payments and complete the necessary procedures. Bashundhara Kings currently face five FIFA sanctions.

The domestic calendar faces another complication involving Fortis FC. The club are scheduled to compete in the AFC Challenge League group stage in Kuwait from 17 to 23 October. Traditionally, domestic fixtures involving a Bangladeshi club are suspended when that club is playing in an Asian competition.

This time, however, the BFF is considering continuing the domestic league during Fortis FC’s continental campaign. If that plan goes ahead, Fortis may have to have postponed league fixtures rearranged later.

For Bangladesh, the immediate priority will be the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Matches against Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore should provide valuable competitive preparation ahead of the SAFF Championship. With four matches guaranteed and the financial arrangements reducing the cost of participation, the tournament offers the national side a timely opportunity to gain international experience while sharpening their preparation for the challenges later in the year.
