Bangladesh Reach Historic High in Test Rankings

Bangladesh have reached their highest-ever position in the ICC Test team rankings after a memorable tour of Australia, despite ending the two-match series with a heavy defeat in Mackay.

The latest rankings were updated by the International Cricket Council on Sunday, 23 August, immediately after the conclusion of the second Test. Bangladesh climbed three places to sixth, recording a rating of 78. It is the highest position the country have ever achieved in the Test rankings. Their previous best was seventh.

The rise comes after Bangladesh produced one of the most significant Test victories in their history in Darwin. Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, the visitors defeated Australia by nine wickets in the opening Test, securing a landmark victory against the world’s top-ranked Test side.

That result gave Bangladesh a strong boost in the rankings and placed them in contention for their best-ever position. Although they could not complete a series victory, the historic success in Darwin was enough to lift them into sixth place following the rankings update.

The second Test in Mackay, however, was a completely different story. Bangladesh were dismissed for just 64 in their first innings and struggled again in the second, eventually being bowled out for 95. Australia won by an innings and 51 runs inside two days, levelling the series at 1-1.

The defeat meant Bangladesh missed an opportunity to collect further rating points. A victory in Mackay would have strengthened their position even further and potentially created a larger gap between them and the teams immediately below.

Bangladesh’s move to sixth has pushed three other sides down the rankings. Sri Lanka are now seventh with a rating of 76, Pakistan have slipped to eighth with 75, while the West Indies have dropped to ninth with 74.

At the top of the Test rankings, Australia remain in first place. South Africa occupy second, followed by New Zealand, India and England. Bangladesh are now positioned immediately outside that leading group of five.

The latest development marks a notable step forward for Bangladesh’s Test cricket. The team had previously reached seventh but had never broken into sixth. The achievement is particularly significant because it follows a victory over Australia away from home, where Bangladesh had never previously won a Test match.

The Darwin victory also demonstrated the potential of Bangladesh’s bowling attack and their ability to compete against a side accustomed to dominating Test cricket on home soil. The result gave the team valuable confidence, while the subsequent ranking rise provides a statistical reflection of their recent progress in the format.

The 1-1 series result means Bangladesh return from Australia without a series victory, but they leave with a historic win and a historic ranking. For a side that has spent much of its Test history outside the top six, reaching sixth represents a significant milestone.

The challenge now will be to maintain that position. Bangladesh will need consistent results in future Test series if they are to consolidate their place among the leading teams and eventually challenge the sides above them.

For the moment, however, the ranking table tells a clear story: Bangladesh have reached a new peak in Test cricket, even though their Australian campaign ended on a disappointing note.
