Two Arrested Over Brutal Murder of Four in Rangpur

Law enforcement agencies in Rangpur have detained two local youths, identified as Siddharth and Mugdha, in connection with the shocking murder of a retired school teacher and his family in the Masuapara area of the city.

The victims—65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a former teacher at Rangpur Zilla School, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 24-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Parthi, and their 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam—were discovered lifeless inside their double-storey home on Saturday night. Local residents alerted the authorities after noticing a foul odour emanating from the property.

Upon entering the residence, police recovered the bodies scattered across different levels of the house: Mr Chakraborty’s body was found on the roof, the bodies of his wife and daughter on the stairs, and his son’s body hidden beneath a bed in a bedroom. The bodies were subsequently transferred to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.

According to reliable police sources, the suspects were rounded up following extensive overnight raids that stretched into Sunday dawn. Investigators noted that evidence at the scene suggested the perpetrators consumed narcotics inside the building after carrying out the killings. One of the suspects reportedly attempted to evade capture by fleeing into a neighbouring mulberry garden managed by the Silk Development Board, before being cornered and detained near the Dokhiganj crematorium.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a local gang targeted the house for robbery, leading to the brutal multiple homicide. Investigators found the electricity supply to the home disconnected, and areas designated for storing cash and valuables ransacked. The CID crime scene unit, alongside the Detective Branch and the Rapid Action Battalion, has gathered crucial forensic evidence from the scene.

Mr Chakraborty had retired from his teaching career in December of the previous year and subsequently ran a homeopathic practice. His daughter had recently completed her master’s examinations in English at Carmichael College, while his young son was a fifth-grade student at Rangpur Zilla School. While police suspect the murders occurred two to three days prior to the discovery, authorities have scheduled a formal press briefing at the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s office to share definitive findings as the manhunt for remaining accomplices continues.
