Local police in Jamalpur have recovered the lifeless body of a thirty-two-year-old woman from a rented fifth-floor apartment in the Sheker Vita area of the town, while her two young children were discovered locked inside a separate room.
The deceased has been identified as Israt Jahan, daughter of Md Ibrahim from Sarkaradi village in Sherpur’s Sreebordi upazila. Her husband, Md Shawon, passed away a year prior, leaving behind a seven-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.
According to local residents and law enforcement officials, Israt had moved into the six-storey residential building with her children roughly a month ago. She had been living there alongside a young man named Md Kausar Ahmed. When leasing the property, Kausar introduced himself to the landlord as Israt’s husband and claimed to be a businessman. Police are still working to verify Kausar’s background, and he has been missing since the incident came to light.
The grim discovery unfolded on Sunday afternoon. Neighbours became suspicious after noticing the children peering through a window and pleading for water from passers-by. Upon investigating, locals found a padlock hanging on the outer door of the flat. Prompted by the unusual situation, they dialled the national emergency hotline, which led local police and fire service personnel to the scene.
Rescuers broke open the door to enter the apartment, where they found Israt’s body lying on a bed in one of the rooms. The two traumatised children were safely rescued from the adjoining locked room. Following the rescue, police sent the body to the Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Nazmus Sakib, the officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, stated that initial assessments suggest the woman may have been strangled. Investigators are actively working to uncover the motive behind the tragedy and track down those responsible. Family members of the victim have arrived at the police station, and legal proceedings are currently underway.
