Two young cousins tragically lost their lives on Sunday morning after drowning in a newly excavated pond in the Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj district.
The victims have been identified as four-year-old Rain and five-year-old Ibrahim, both residents of the Kathalbari area under the Baghra union. Rain was the son of Mohiuddin Molla, while Ibrahim was the son of Mohsin Molla. The pair were paternal cousins.
According to local accounts and family members, the incident occurred at approximately eleven in the morning. An uncle of the victims, Chan Molla, explained that a pond had been dug roughly two hundred feet away from their family home just two months prior, complete with a newly constructed concrete landing platform along its edge.
On Sunday morning, the two children were playing near this concrete ghat. Investigators believe that one of the boys accidentally slipped, and the other fell in while trying to help or playing nearby.
Family members only realised the children were missing after an exhaustive search began. Roughly an hour after they were last seen, relatives located the boys inside the pond and pulled them out from the water. They were rushed immediately to the Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, but the duty medical officer declared both children dead upon arrival.
Md Anisur Rahman, the additional superintendent of police for the Sirajdikhan-Sreenagar circle in Munshiganj, confirmed that law enforcement received reports of the accidental drowning. Police personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Local authorities continue to look into the incident as grieving family members mourn the sudden loss of the two young cousins.
