A local leader of the Awami Jubo League has died after being ambushed and hacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in Bhairab, Kishoreganj district. The victim, identified as Mohammad Alamin Saikat, served as the general secretary of the Bhairab Municipal Jubo League. He succumbed to severe haemorrhaging shortly after being transported in a critical condition to a hospital in Dhaka early on Sunday.
The violent assault unfolded at approximately midnight on Saturday in a deserted pocket of the Bhairab Bazar commercial area. According to local residents and witnesses, a group of armed attackers ambushed Saikat, striking him repeatedly across the head with sharp-edged domestic weapons and deliberately severing the tendon of one of his legs. The assailants fled into nearby alleyways under the cover of darkness, leaving him incapacitated and bleeding profusely on the road.
Hearing the commotion, local residents rushed to the scene and found Saikat lying in a pool of blood. They transferred the critically injured youth leader via rickshaw to the state-run Chandiber Upazila Health Complex. Attending medical staff provided emergency triage to stem the blood loss, but given the severity of the trauma to his skull and the extensive arterial damage in his lower limbs, the physicians referred him immediately to a specialised tertiary facility in Dhaka for advanced trauma care.
Family members quickly arranged an ambulance to transport him to the capital. However, upon arrival at the hospital in Dhaka, emergency physicians pronounced him dead, citing severe trauma and catastrophic blood loss sustained during the assault.
News of the killing sparked palpable tension and apprehension throughout Bhairab, prompting law enforcement agencies to deploy additional personnel to sensitive intersections across the municipal area. Media representatives and police contingents visited the crime scene overnight to secure the perimeter and speak with witnesses.
The Officer-in-Charge of Bhairab Police Station stated that police personnel responded immediately upon receiving reports of the incident, conducting initial inquiries at the location to piece together the sequence of events. Senior police officials confirmed that an investigation is actively under way to establish the motive behind the targeted killing and track down those responsible for the attack.
Family sources confirmed that Saikat’s body remains at the hospital mortuary pending an official post-mortem examination, after which decisions regarding the handover of the remains, funeral prayers, and burial arrangements will be finalised.
