Police have arrested Mujibur Rahman Mujib, general secretary of the Awami League’s North Fenchuganj union unit, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in Sylhet’s Fenchuganj.
Mujibur was arrested during a police operation at his home in the Manikona area of the upazila on Sunday evening (23 August). He is the general secretary of the Awami League’s 5th North Fenchuganj Union unit.
According to police, Mujibur is named as an accused in a case involving allegations of planning acts of sabotage. Officers said the operation at his residence was carried out as part of the investigation and efforts to arrest individuals named in the case.
Following his arrest, Mujibur was taken to Fenchuganj Police Station. Police said they were reviewing the case documents and completing the necessary legal procedures before taking further action.
A. M. M. Ashraful Haque, a sub-inspector at Fenchuganj Police Station, confirmed that Mujibur was arrested from his residence. He said the accused would be produced before a court after the completion of the legal formalities, following which the court would decide on the next course of action.
Police have not disclosed detailed information about the alleged sabotage plan cited in the case. They have also not provided details of any specific incident that Mujibur is accused of planning or participating in.
There was no immediate information from police about whether any weapons, explosives or other materials were recovered during the operation at his residence.
The arrest comes as investigators continue proceedings in the case and work to locate other individuals named as accused. However, the available information does not establish what specific role Mujibur allegedly played in the incident or the nature of the evidence against him.
