Global Oil Prices Slip Ahead of New US Sanctions

Crude oil prices experienced a notable decline in international markets, dropping by more than one dollar per barrel. The downward shift occurred as investors locked in profits ahead of anticipated, harsher economic sanctions from the United States targeting Iran.

According to market reports, investor anxiety centres on the potential for fresh regulatory measures to further restrict petroleum supplies originating from the Middle East. In Monday’s trading sessions, Brent crude futures fell by $1.23, or 1.3%, settling at $93.16 per barrel. Concurrently, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a decrease of $1.36, or 1.6%, closing at $85.70 per barrel.

These adjustments follow two consecutive weeks of price gains for both major benchmarks. Last week’s upward trajectory—which exceeded 5%—was primarily driven by a diplomatic deadlock surrounding US-Iran negotiations and reduced crude transit through the critical Strait of Hormuz, a maritime chokepoint historically responsible for transporting roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum supply.

Market analysts note that upcoming financial restrictions could severely curtail Iranian crude exports, tightening global supply chains. Particular concern surrounds potential geopolitical fallout, especially if regional tensions escalate in response to mounting economic pressures. While Iranian leadership has condemned the planned measures, official statements have simultaneously encouraged diplomatic channels to de-escalate ongoing friction.

Meanwhile, secondary effects are already visible in regional logistics. US measures have altered trade patterns for Asian importers, while regional authorities in Iraq have successfully coordinated passage for specific oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz following formal requests. Energy experts caution that if geopolitical confrontations persist, the restoration of normal supply flows from the Middle East may face prolonged delays, keeping global energy markets under continuous pressure.
