Kolkata-based singer, songwriter and music composer Anupam Roy has become a father, with his wife Proshpita Pal giving birth to their first child together at a private hospital in Kolkata on Monday, 17 August. The arrival of their son has brought fresh attention to the musician’s personal life, which he has generally kept away from public scrutiny.
Roy married singer Proshpita Pal in March 2024. The marriage was his third, a detail that has attracted considerable discussion among fans and social media users. While his relationship with his present wife is now in the spotlight following the birth of their son, renewed public curiosity has also focused on his earlier marriages, particularly his first wife, Shreya.
Roy has rarely spoken publicly about his first marriage. During his engineering studies at Jadavpur University, he reportedly entered into a relationship with Shreya, and the two later married. The marriage eventually ended because of personal differences. Neither side, however, publicly engaged in a prolonged dispute or attempted to turn the separation into a media controversy.
Shreya has largely remained away from the public eye, and photographs or detailed accounts of the couple’s early relationship are scarce. Roy himself has generally maintained a clear boundary between his professional career and his private affairs.
His second marriage was to Piya Chakraborty in 2015. Piya is known as a social worker and has also been associated with music. The pair occasionally performed together and were seen as a creative partnership as well as a married couple.
Their relationship ended during the coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, the couple jointly announced their separation after several years of marriage. The decision was presented without the kind of public confrontation that often surrounds celebrity break-ups. Roy later described Piya’s departure from his life as one of his greatest personal losses.
Both subsequently moved on with their lives. Piya later married actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay, and the couple welcomed a son in June 2025. Roy, meanwhile, began a new chapter with Proshpita.
The birth of Roy’s son has now added another dimension to that journey. On Friday, 21 August, Proshpita shared the first glimpse of the baby on Facebook, although she deliberately kept the child’s face out of view. The photograph showed the newborn sleeping peacefully in his mother’s arms.
Alongside the picture, Proshpita expressed her gratitude to God and nature for every moment of the experience. The post quickly drew attention from admirers, who sent messages of congratulations to the couple.
Despite his public profile, Roy has traditionally been restrained about sharing details of his family life. His social media presence has focused largely on music and professional activities, with only occasional posts involving Proshpita. That privacy has made public interest in his relationships particularly strong whenever a major personal development becomes known.
Roy’s professional journey, meanwhile, remains closely linked with the revival of contemporary Bengali music in the early 2010s. He gained widespread recognition through Srijit Mukherji’s 2010 film Autograph, particularly for the songs ‘Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao’ and ‘Beche Thakar Gaan’. His distinctive songwriting, understated vocal style and melodic approach soon established him as one of the prominent voices in modern Bengali music.
Since then, Roy has built a career spanning playback singing, songwriting, composition and independent music. His work has earned him a substantial following on both sides of the Bengal border.
For now, however, music has taken a temporary back seat to a deeply personal milestone. After years of public interest in his relationships and career, Anupam Roy is entering another chapter of his life — this time as a father.
