Discrepancies have emerged between police claims and post-mortem findings in the brutal quadruple murder of retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family in Rangpur. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Dr Bablu Kishore Biswas, who conducted the autopsies at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, clarified several medical aspects of the case that contradict initial police statements.
According to Dr Biswas, medical evidence confirms that all four victims were killed by asphyxiation due to strangulation. However, forensic examination revealed no evidence of broken jaws, directly contradicting earlier claims made by law enforcement. Dr Biswas also addressed widespread local rumours regarding the use of acid on the victims’ faces, stating that no chemical burns were present. He explained that the blackened, burnt appearance of the bodies was the natural result of advanced decomposition after remaining inside the locked house for several days. Various biological samples have been collected and sent to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) laboratory for chemical analysis.
The forensic medical findings diverge notably from statements made on Sunday by Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud. During a press conference, Commissioner Mabud stated that a rope had been tied so tightly around the mouth and neck of 25-year-old victim Agami Chakraborty that her eyes had bulged out and her jawbone was broken.
The victims belonged to a well-known family in the Machhuapara area of Rangpur city. Concerns grew on Saturday evening when relatives, unable to establish contact, alerted the police. Officers arrived at the locked residence at approximately 10:30 pm and broke inside to discover a horrific scene. Police found the body of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired teacher at Rangpur Zilla School, in the attic. His 52-year-old wife, Preetilata Chakraborty, and daughter, Agami, lay dead on the staircase, while his 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty—a fifth-grade pupil at Rangpur Zilla School—was found murdered in a first-floor bedroom.
Initial investigations suggest the family was targeted after objecting to drug abuse in the vicinity, an allegation that has sparked widespread outrage across the nation. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killings: 23-year-old Mugdha Das, a fish market worker, and his 19-year-old cousin Siddhartha Das, a goldsmith. Both reside in the Machhuapara neighbourhood and remain in custody as investigators await final forensic reports from the CID laboratory.
