Tensions Rise in Savar Over Proposed Urs Gathering

Controversy has erupted in the Savar area as local political and religious factions strongly oppose an upcoming Urs Sharif programme organised by followers of the late Sufi figure Pir Sureshwari. The event, scheduled to take place at the private residence of Qazi Jabir Al-Jahangir in the Chakulia locality, has prompted formal protests, memoranda, and heightened security concerns across the sub-district.

Opposing Factions Voice Concern

A coalition representing various political and religious platforms submitted a formal memorandum to the Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Savar Model Police Station, demanding the immediate cancellation of the gathering. The signatories include local figures from Hefazat-e-Islam, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Juba Dal, Bangladesh Khilafah Movement, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Leaders of the coalition claim that Qazi Jabir Al-Jahangir has previously delivered controversial statements regarding fundamental Islamic beliefs, leading to ideological friction within the local community. Maulana Yusuf Sadik Haqqani, Secretary General of the Bangladesh Khilafah Movement, stated that the objection stems from theological interpretations rather than personal grievances. Similarly, local BNP and Juba Dal representatives emphasised that their primary objective is maintaining public order and preventing communal discord in the area.

Defence and Counter-Claims

Rejecting the allegations as entirely groundless, Qazi Jabir Al-Jahangir maintained that the event is a private domestic remembrance observance commemorating his late father, a tradition held within his family compound for nearly two decades. He noted that no outdoor marquees or loudspeaker systems would be utilised for the observance.

Furthermore, Mr Jahangir expressed apprehension regarding his family’s safety, citing a previous violent incident at his residence in late 2024 that resulted in property damage and legal proceedings. He has since filed a general diary with local law enforcement to ensure adequate protection.

Administrative Response

Local authorities have acknowledged the conflicting viewpoints and stepped up vigilance to prevent any deterioration of public safety. Mr Md Saiful Islam, the Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer, confirmed that the complainants have been urged to maintain peace while administrative officials review the matter alongside the police department. Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Mr Md Saiful Alam, noted that law enforcement remains alert to address potential security challenges.
